Today's release addressed these issues:

  • Headlines - Added the ability to display a scrolling list of FeedLetter headlines at the top of any community. Use the "Manage" option, then "Change Settings", then "Headline Options" to configure. For an example, please see http://www.bubblecommunities.com/community/bubblelife and http://www.digitalefforts.com.

    3-31-2009
  • Speed - When accessing pages in the FeedLetter sometimes response would be slow especially if the page number was high. Sometimes, this was taking so long that the page couldn't display in the time allowed and an error message was displayed. FeedLetter pages now display much more quickly.
  • Minor bug fixes - Improved formatting for calendar entries and corrected other minor issues.

That's all for today.

Thanks,

Jeff

Today's release addressed:
  • Smart Summaries - In FeedLetters, some articles are much longer than others which makes the formatting look odd. With Smart Summaries, you now have a way to automatically compute an article summary for display rather than just showing the first 250 characters as was the previous method.

Smart Summaries use word and sentence analysis to determine which sentences are most important in a story. It then extracts these sentences as an article summary. Smart Summaries work well for news stories, blog entries and other articles that follow a standard sentence/paragraph layout. Smart Summaries don't work as well for articles where there is a lot of text in non-sentence form. For those blogs, the first 250 characters is the best way to shorten a story.

For example, from a 19 paragraph/624 word article from InfoWorld, Smart Summary was able to summarize the article as:

"Zend Technologies is putting the finishing touches to Zend Server, a new Web applications server aimed at mission-critical PHP applications."

To see this in practice, visit the following FeedLetter section:

    http://www.bubblecommunities.com/community/cloud_computing/folder/351550

To enable Smart Summaries, for a FeedLetter feed, choose the Smart Summary option for the appropriate FeedLetter Section under the "Manage" community option.

That's all for today.

Thanks,

Jeff

Today's release addressed these issues:
  • FeedLetter article discussion - Added the ability to link a Discussion community to a FeedLetter so you can discuss articles within a community. Use the Settings option under Manage and look for "FeedLetter Options". Choose an existing discussion community to link to your FeedLetter. Then, all articles will start displaying a "Discuss" link which lets readers transfer the article link to the linked discussion community.
  • Improved source code formatting - Provides new options to use "hard spaces" within source code. With the "hard spaces" option checked, all spaces are important. With it unchecked, only leading spaces are important.
  • Minor bug fixes - Fixed a problem introduced yesterday that prevented the creation of FeedLetter groups.
That's all for today, please keep giving us feedback at support@bubblecommunities.com.

Thanks,
Jeff

Today's release addressed these issues:
  • FeedLetter Header - It is now possible to turn off the header above a FeedLetter. The title across the top of the page can be set differently that the title of a FeedLetter. For example, if you want to have a standard identity for several FeedLetters you can setup your page header and then have each FeedLetter display its own identity. Or, with today's feature you can just turn it off.
  • Minor bug fixes - Fixed a problem introduced yesterday that made it impossible to download or subscribe to a calendar.
That's all for today, please keep giving us feedback at support@bubblecommunities.com.

Thanks,
Jeff

One of the cool getting started features in BubbleCommunities is the Wordpress import feature. If you already have a blog on Wordpress, you can easily migrate it to a BubbleCommunity by simply exporting your Wordpress blog and importing it into BubbleCommunity.

To migrate your blog:
  1. Export your blog from Wordpress by going to your dashboard and choosing the Tools option followed by the Export option. Save the exported file onto your computer.
  2. Login to BubbleCommunities, and create a blog community.
  3. Goto your new community and choose the "Manage" option.
  4. Click on the import content option, choose Wordpress and upload the file saved in Step 1.
  5. Done!
To see a before and after, look at this blog at Wordpress: http://sportsesteem.wordpress.com.

Now, see the after at: http://www.sportsesteem.com.

As a BubbleCommunity, the blog can now be:

  1. Converted to a blog, discussion or workgroup community.
  2. Easily "bubbled" into other communities.
  3. Sorted into topics as well as tags.
  4. Broadcast on Twitter.
  5. Enhanced with new formatting options such as story summaries.
  6. Enhanced with your own custom CSS formatting at no extra charge.

While Wordpress has a great solution for blogging, the blogs stand alone. A BubbleCommunity shares with other communities.

After working, reworking and reworking again, the BubbleCommunities project is almost there. Last night shipped our pre-beta version for testing on the public server. The product is now feature complete for the beta version. With a little luck, this phase will be short and the official beta will begin.
